Smith Design Associates were appointed as Architects by Wm Morrison Supermarkets Ltd back in 2017 for their new / replacement supermarket development which included a new Petrol Filling Station and car park with circa 360 spaces.

Although planning approval ‘in principle’ was agreed at the end of 2019, there then followed a prolonged Section 75 legal process (through the Covid pandemic) involving back-to-back land deals with Barratt Housing. This process delayed the release of the formal planning approval until November 2021, and as both Morrisons and Barrat Housing were keen to release land as early as possible, it was decided to construct the development in 3 phases.

Phase 1 enabling works was the site clearance & remediation of the vacant site of the former Bishopbriggs High School and construction of circa 290m long x 5m high timber Perma-crib retaining walls to form platformed sites for the supermarket site and future housing areas. The works were carried out by Advanced Construction Scotland between December 2021 and May 2022.

Phase 2 comprised the construction of a six pump Petrol filling station with 3,050 sq ft kiosk with jet wash, access roads, and car park for 49No spaces together with a SUDS attenuation/storage pond for the surface water drainage system. This phase of the works also included the fit-out of an existing unit in the adjacent Triangle Shopping Centre to form a temporary Pharmacy. These works were carried out by ISG between August 2022 and February 2023.

Phase 3 included the demolition of the existing supermarket and parking deck, and construction of the new 50,600 sq ft supermarket and an additional 308No parking spaces including 19No wheelchair accessible space, 20No parent & toddler spaces, 4No click & collect spaces, 6No EV charging spaces and 5No motorcycle spaces. The supermarket includes a 104No seat customer café, pharmacy, Morrison’s latest ‘One Kitchen’ concept incorporating Oven Fresh, Salad Bar, Deli & Pizza counters together with individual Bakery, Butcher, Fishmonger & Nutmeg clothing departments. The works also included over-cladding of the adjacent Triangle Shopping Centre and were carried out by Bowmer & Kirkland / Key Property Solutions between May 2023 and June 2024.
